Author’s Note: This Non-Fiction essay is about stereotyping in the story Bud Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. The purpose is to explain how stereotyping really impacts the book.
In the story Bud Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis there are many stereo types. For example when you read the story Bud’s grammar is not great because he talks with many slang words. When you meet someone for the first time it might not be that presentable to talk like that. Another stereotype is being poor because since he is out on his own people look at him and judge him because he can’t afford anything. Although there are many stereo types, people shouldn’t stereo type Bud before they get to know him.
Grammar is they way people speak. The way Bud speaks is just the way the people around him do. Like when he lived in the Foster Home that’s how all of the children spoke. When Bud went on his journey to find his family, on the way people judged him because of the way he talked. To them he had an accent. To the people that lived in Flint, where Bud lived, that was how everyone talked and they were used to it. Another reason why Bud had different grammar then his family in the Grand Rapids is that Bud never went to school. He couldn’t because he didn’t have money to be able to enroll into a school. Before his mother died, she always read him stories. He remembers those, but he still can’t read that well. People shouldn’t stereotype other people because of how they talk.
Another reason why people stereotype Bud is because of his race and the color of his skin. Many people get stereotyped due to that reason. Back in the 1930’s was during the Great Depression, when many people were running out of money, losing their homes, and not being able to afford food and clothes. People like Bud, that were African American and had no place to live were stereo typed a lot. I see people in cities that I visit that may be homeless, I might think to myself that maybe he is poor and talks funny, but really he isn’t really having great life and it going through a battle to get food and shelter. When Bud was walking to the Grand Rapids, people would drive by and just stare at him because they were probably thinking something similar to what I would think when I see someone like Bud.
Furthermore, being poor is another stereotype in the story. Bud was a ten year old boy that is living on his own and doesn’t have a job or money. He really only has what he carries around in his suitcase, which is another pair of clothes and things that his momma left behind. When you see a young boy on the side of the road walking and carrying a large suit case what do you think of? I would definitely think of a homeless boy that his out living on his own. Bud is not homeless but just by looking at him he does look homeless because he can’t afford much. That is judging someone by what they have and look like. It is technically a stereotype.
In conclusion, stereotyping happens a lot, to people all over. People stereotype other people for all of the wrong reasons. It is mean some of the time and it seems like it is just what people do before they think. But stereotyping isn’t about just making fun of someone it can be about criticizing them and talking about them behind their back. I believe that it is another form of bullying.

Conflict/Resolution
Author’s Note: This creative piece is a letter from character to character in the story Bud Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. The purpose is to show how Bud feels about his family he never met.
Dear Herman E. Calloway,
I was six years old when my Momma died. When I was younger my momma would always have flyers of you and your band around the house. I always wanted to ask her why she had them, but I knew she wouldn't tell me. When she died I took them with me and always wondered who the man on the front of the flyer was. I think that it was you Mr. Calloway. I have read through every word and seen every picture of your flyers and posters and thinking that my momma kept these, was a mystery to me. After thinking it through I finally realized that maybe she was trying to tell me something, something about you. Herman I think that my momma was trying to tell me that you know her and that you might know me. I have one question for you. Are you my father?
I never wanted to say this out loud or write it down, but I think you are my father. I know this might be sounding weird, but why else would my momma save these flyers about you? Someday I would really like to meet you Herman E. Calloway.
Sincerely,
Bud-Not-Buddy

Social Studies Similarities and Differences
Author's Note: I wrote this essay about similarities and differences between the movie The Patriot and the book Hope's Revolutionary War Diary.
Many deaths during the 1700’s were a result of the war. People that were not part of the British Army were effortlessly killed. Luckily for Hope, she was a girl and during this era most women and young girls were spared and were responsible for the care of the household and other children. Some of the citizens desired war because they didn’t want the king to take over their land. Other citizens wanted their freedom and felt that they had no other choice but to fight for it.
A similarity between Hope’s life and the lives of all of the characters in the movie, The Patriot, was that they both had families that were separated. When the father had to leave for war with his son in The Patriot, he was forced to leave his other children behind with their aunt, because their mother died. In the story, Hope’s Revolutionary War Diary, Hope’s father and brother went to war separating them from Hope and the rest of their family. During the war, Hope’s brother is captured and held as a prisoner of war. In the movie, one of the generals captures seventeen men from the militia. The men that were captured were prisoners, but eventually someone comes to save them and they are able to be set free. Hope’s brother was also released from prison and allowed to go home, but had to stay hidden so the British wouldn’t kill him.
In the movie, the father had to take his children to hide them because he didn’t want any soldiers to kill them. The movie and story are similar in the way that the British invaded both of their homes and villages. The British would deliberately set the houses and churches on fire. The buildings burned to the ground and killed some people that were in the houses. One day when Hope was outside in the town in the distance she could see the soldiers marching toward her to begin their invasion of her town. In the movie, The Patriot, the children woke up in the middle of the night to the sounds of horses footsteps, another unwanted invasion. The little girls had to wake up their aunt and immediately go into hiding. The British burnt down their house, but they were able to escape before succumbing to the smoke and fire.
There are many more similarities, but one difference between the movie and the story is that the story was based on the point of view of Hope, a young girl. The reason I believe it was from her point of view because the story was told based of entries from her diary. In the movie, they had many different points of views, switching from character to character. For example, they switched from the father to the son, to the children. If the book talked about how other people were seeing the war then it would have been similar to the movies changing view points.
Another difference between the two is Hope’s father wasn’t a significant character in the war. His role was that of a soldier that fought hard but he never was promoted within the ranks of the military and he never desire to do so. The father in The Patriot took on more of a leadership position in the war compared to Hope’s father. The father in the movie made and commanded his own militia and was in charge along side of his son.
In conclusion, there were many things that were similar and many things that were different when comparing the book We are the Patriots and the movie, The Patriot.

Creative Writing piece
In the bright blue foamy ocean water, camouflage stingrays and colorful fish swim beneath my eyes. The crystal clear, salty water looked like it was from the end of the earth. You can hear the waves, crashing and booming like thunder against the rocks and sand. Nearby, you can hear little children screaming for ice-cream to refresh themselves. I can feel the cool breeze blowing my hair back from my soaking wet face. It was one hundred degrees outside and I was parched. Salt water is not good for drinking.
It was a warm Friday, and I was on vacation with my family. Running a little late to an important spa day with my mom, I fell while trying to not be late. I was in such a shock that I lay on the ground waiting for help to come. Finally my mom turned around and realized that I was resting there breathless, and didn’t know what to say. Even though I was in pain, getting a spa treatment was far more significant. By the end of the day, I made myself feel better by drinking lattes.
I ended up learning that even though, you may think that something terrible has happened to you, you can always make it better.

Retelling of Out of My Mind
Author’s Note: I am writing a retelling piece about the book Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper.
All Melody Brooks wants is to be able to speak her mind, but she cannot speak due to a disability which is a roadblock in her life. When she figures out how she can communicate, her life changes completely.
One event that really stood out in this story was when Melody got her talker. It is a machine that talks for her since she is not able to speak on her own. For people that have disabilities and cannot speak, it changes their life when they are finally able to do something that they could never do before.

Bud Not Buddy Quote
Authors Note: I am writing a short response on an important quote in the story, Bud Not Buddy.
There is an important quote in the story Bud Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. It was said by Bud’s mother while she was still living. "A bud is a flower-to-be. A flower-in-waiting. Waiting for just the right warmth and care to open up. It's a little fist of love waiting to unfold and be seen by the world. And that's you." There are many other things that Bud’s mama told him before she died. I believe that this is the most important quote.
People always judge before they get to know someone well. This quote reminds me of this because it is saying that when you’re ready, you will show everyone who you really are. I remember reading this specific chapter in this story; Bud was at his foster home and the Amos’s thought he was a terrible person just because he was African American and did not have that much clothes or money.
Overall I believe that this quote means a lot to this story and how it relates to Bud a lot as a person. This was considering what he had gone through. Bud’s mother had some pretty useful things to say to Bud, and it is a great thing that he still remembers what she told him. If he didn’t then he wouldn’t be the same person he is now. It shows that Bud loved his mother a lot and knew enough to take her words and use them to shape his life for the better. Without that instinct, I fear that Bud would not have fared so well.

Character Speech
Authors Note: I wrote this speech on the main character of the book Bud Not Buddy.
Bud is a young African American boy that is battling through his tough life. His mother passed away when he was little. Bud always remembered what his mama told him before she died. One thing he always remembered was, “Bud is your name and don’t you ever let anyone call you anything outside of that either.” His mom was a tough woman and he looked up to her and always did what she said.
Bud believes in everything that his mother told him. She always said one other thing to Bud, “No matter how bad things look to you, no matter how dark the night, when one door closes, don’t worry, because another door opens.” Bud seems like a kind and brave boy. He isn’t a bad person even though he is going through a lot. He impacts other characters because he has a good attitude about everything and even though his mother passed he still remembers what she always told him.
